Australian AI robot startup Andromeda bags $15.2m series A

Andromeda, a Melbourne-based startup developing AI-powered humanoid companion robots, has raised AU$23 million (US$15.16 million) in a series A round, giving the company a US$100 million valuation.

The investment was led by San Francisco’s Forerunner Ventures and included Rethink Impact, Artesian, Main Sequence, Visible, Trampoline, and former Atlassian futurist Dom Price.

Existing investors Purpose Ventures and Startmate, as well as Galileo Ventures, also took part.

The company plans to use the new funding to expand into the US, with Brown relocating there to lead the effort.

Founded by Yan Chen and Grace Brown in 2022, Andromeda builds a robot called Abi, which has been tested as a companion for elderly people in aged care trials.

Other Australian startups in the sector include Sydney’s The Robot Factory, which makes robots for various aged care tasks.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Companion robots benefit from better market timing after previous industry failures

  • Andromeda’s funding comes as the elder care robotics market shows unprecedented growth, with projections from $2.93 billion in 2024 to $9.85 billion by 2033 at a 14.31% annual growth rate1.
  • This contrasts sharply with earlier companion robot failures like Jibo, which raised $3.5 million but collapsed due to delayed shipments and poor reviews2.
  • The aging population and caregiver shortages now create stronger market demand, with the healthcare companion robots segment specifically valued at $1.9 billion in 2023 and projected to grow at 15.9% annually3.

AI advancement enables more sophisticated human-robot interaction than previous generations

  • Modern AI-powered robots can combine machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing to perform complex autonomous tasks, representing a significant leap from earlier social robots4.
  • The global robotics market is projected to grow from $53.2 billion in 2024 to $178.7 billion by 2033, driven primarily by AI advancements that enable real-time learning and adaptation4.
  • Previous companion robots like Anki’s Vector and Cozmo lacked the sophisticated AI capabilities that modern systems possess, contributing to Anki’s failure in 2019 before being revived under new ownership.
  • The integration of analytical, physical, and generative AI applications in robotics represents a fundamental shift that addresses the interaction limitations that hampered earlier companion robots5.
