Australian AI firm Firmus bets $300m on trans-Pacific cable

Sydney-based AI infrastructure company Firmus said on September 3 it would invest about US$300 million to secure up to 150 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity for 25 years on Australian submarine cable developer SUBCO’s planned APX East link between Australia and the US.

The companies said the deal would give Firmus dedicated trans-Pacific connectivity for AI training and inference.

APX East is expected to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2028.

APX East remains in development ahead of its 2028 target, according to trade and industry reports.

The 150 Tbps commitment appears large in regional terms.

JGA South, a cable linking Australia, Guam, and Japan rather than a direct Australia-US route, has a cited design capacity of 36 Tbps.

Australia’s AI and data center expansion has also faced power, grid, and permitting pressure.

One report warned new facilities could stretch grid capacity, while another noted new approval rules for AI-heavy projects.
