Australia’s Communications Minister Anika Wells has called for a meeting with Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) after a fatal outage at its Optus unit led to four deaths.

Optus, Australia’s second-largest telecom operator, is owned by SingTel and generates about half of the parent company’s revenue.

The outage on September 18, 2025 caused by a failed network upgrade, prevented about 480 customers from reaching emergency services.

Wells said Optus could face heavier financial penalties, noting the company was fined A$12 million (US$7.9 million) in 2023 for a previous incident.
