Australia sues Amazon over unfair Prime Video ad terms

Australia’s competition regulator is taking Amazon Australia to court, alleging that unfair Prime subscription terms.

The regulator alleges these terms allowed Amazon to add ads to Prime Video in July 2024, forcing annual subscribers to either accept ads or pay AU$2.99 more a month for an ad-free option.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said Amazon Australia allegedly used the terms between November 2023 and August 2025.

The regulator said the terms affected more than 1 million annual Prime subscribers in Australia. Furthermore, the policy gave no refund entitlement to subscribers who canceled after the change. It is seeking consumer redress and penalties.

Amazon said it is reviewing the case and had cooperated with the investigation.
