Australia plans big tech fines over anti-competitive conduct

Australia proposes fines of up to US$33 million for tech firms over anti-competitive conduct or preventing consumer choice between services.

It empowers the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to monitor compliance, investigate violations, and enforce penalties.

The government aims to focus on app marketplaces and ad tech services, based on the ACCC’s advice.

A 2022 ACCC report revealed Google’s dominance in online search services, with a 93%-95% market share.

Apple’s App Store and Google Play together represent the bulk of app downloads at 60% and 40%, respectively.

Meta’s Facebook and Instagram account for 79% of social media services in Australia.
