Australia flags cyber risks from Anthropic’s Mythos AI

Australia said on April 23 it was working with Anthropic on possible cybersecurity flaws, after the limited release of Mythos AI model raised concerns about critical infrastructure.

The government was tracking emerging vulnerabilities, while the central banks of Australia and New Zealand were monitoring the release.

Anthropic released a preview of its Mythos AI model after early tests found thousands of major vulnerabilities.

Experts warned advanced coding and autonomous tools could speed up sophisticated cyberattacks, especially in banking, where older and interconnected systems remain common.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Mythos can find flaws and build working exploits

  • Anthropic’s model can recreate software flaws and write working exploits, code that abuses those flaws, on its first try in more than 83% of cases 1.
  • It found a 27-year-old vulnerability in OpenBSD, a security-focused operating system with strong built-in protections 1.
  • The model could also link four separate bugs to break through browser and operating system sandboxes, security barriers that keep programs away from sensitive parts of a device 2.

AI is changing how cybersecurity makes money

  • As AI makes security flaw hunting cheap and easy to scale, cybersecurity value is moving away from costly discovery work such as penetration testing, where firms simulate attacks to find weaknesses 3.
  • Remediation now carries more value because teams must read AI findings, rank them by business risk, then manage patching across company systems 3.
  • This will put pressure on the global tech ecosystem, especially small volunteer teams that maintain critical open-source projects, software whose code is publicly available 3.
  • Cyber insurers are expected to reprice risk quickly, likely adding exclusions for AI-discovered vulnerabilities left unfixed past set deadlines 3.
