Australia fines Telegram $640k for safety issues
Australia’s eSafety Commission has imposed a fine of approximately A$1 million (US$640,000) on the messaging platform Telegram for its delayed response to inquiries about online safety measures.
The platform failed to provide timely information regarding efforts to combat child abuse and violent extremist content.
In March 2024, the eSafety Commission requested details from several platforms, including Telegram and Reddit.
Despite a deadline in May, Telegram did not respond until October, which the Commission stated hindered the implementation of Australia’s online safety measures.
