Australia dodges US tariffs, but faces economic risks

Australia has avoided the steep “reciprocal tariffs” imposed by the US under President Donald Trump’s trade measures.

While Australia faces a general 10% tariff, it is exempt from higher tariffs placed on countries like China, Japan, and South Korea.

However, Australian beef farmers may face significant challenges due to new trade barriers, though exports like gold and pharmaceuticals are exempted.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized the tariffs as “totally unwarranted” but acknowledged Australia fared better than other nations.

Foreign minister Penny Wong highlighted the impact on Asian economies, including key trading partners. She stressed the need for a calm response to the disruptions, as sectors like iron ore, coal, and gas exports could be affected.

Analysts warn that the tariffs could slow construction and manufacturing in North Asia, which would hit Australia’s resource-dependent economy.

Any economic slowdown in China, Australia’s top trading partner, could have a significant domestic impact, especially in resource-heavy regions like Western Australia.
