Aussie scoring platform LiveHeats raises $838k seed funding

Liveheats, Sydney-based digital scoring platform, has secured AUD$1.3 million (US$838,405) in seed funding to support its global expansion and product development.

Founded in 2016 by Chris Friend and Fernando Freire, Liveheats focuses on competition management for sports communities.

The company plans to allocate the funds towards expanding its product design and engineering teams while enhancing its sales presence in the US and Europe.

The funding round received support from several investors, including Campaign Monitor co-founder Ben Richardson, former world surfing champion Joel Parkinson, and Investible co-founder Trevor Folsom. Other notable investors include 86 400 founder Robert Bell and former CFO Belinda Hogan.

Liveheats provides tools for event organizers to create competitions, manage entries and payments, and schedule athletes into heats. The platform allows judges to score events using mobile devices, offering real-time public scores and rankings online and via livestreams.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Sports tech’s explosive growth creates opportunities for specialized platforms

LiveHeats’ funding success reflects the broader sports technology sector’s rapid expansion, projected to reach $30 billion by 2024 1.

This growth is fueled by consistent investment increases, with venture funding for sports tech growing at nearly 30% annually since 2012 and over US$1 billion invested in sports-related startups by 2015 2.

While traditional sports media faces challenges, such as ESPN losing 621,000 cable subscribers in a single month 2, specialized platforms addressing specific market needs are finding success.

LiveHeats’ focus on action and adventure sports demonstrates how digital transformation is reaching beyond mainstream sports, creating solutions for underserved niches that still represent substantial market opportunities.

The company’s progression from US$2 million to a targeted US$10 million in revenue by 2028 illustrates the significant growth potential in specialized sports technology, even while serving markets smaller than traditional ball sports.

2️⃣ Digital platforms democratize sports management in emerging markets

LiveHeats’ success in countries like Indonesia and Brazil highlights how mobile-first platforms can leapfrog expensive legacy systems in emerging markets 3.

The platform’s minimal hardware requirements allow judges to score from any device, making advanced competition management accessible to organizations without significant technology infrastructure 3.
