Asus to halt smartphone expansion, shift focus to AI

Asus has confirmed it will not expand its smartphone lineup this year, shifting focus to AI and robotics, according to company leadership.

During a year-end employee gathering in Taipei, chairman Jonney Shih said that Asus will not introduce new phone models or enter new segments within its existing smartphone portfolio.

The company will continue supporting current users with after-sales services but will not prioritize volume growth in the competitive market.

Asus plans to invest more in AI-driven hardware, including robotics, edge computing devices, and enterprise systems, aiming for long-term growth outside of consumer smartphones.

The company indicated that its smartphone business will focus on support rather than expansion, as it pivots toward developing physical AI products and integrated platforms.

This strategic shift marks a move away from smartphones as a growth driver toward AI and robotics technologies.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The economics and customer concentration of ASUS’s AI pivot remain unclear

  • Nearly 20% of ASUS’s revenue is now being generated by AI servers, yet the profit margin has not been verified 1.
  • Recent server revenue growth, which more than doubled quarter over quarter, has not been broken down by customer concentration, including large enterprise buyers and public-sector orders in Europe and the US 1.
  • ASUS’s access to high-demand NVIDIA accelerators such as the GB200 (a data-center AI computing platform built around NVIDIA’s latest chips) has not been confirmed, even though supply shapes its ability to ship systems and keep sales growth going 2.

Competitors can target ASUS’s niche gaming smartphone customers

  • Rival phone brands and retailers can use ASUS’s choice to keep its smartphone lineup narrow to win over a loyal, high-spend audience.
  • ASUS held a 2.8% global market share, equal to 5 million units and about $2.9 billion in revenue, which supports a meaningful niche 3.
  • The strongest pull sits in high-performance gaming phones, where the ROG Phone has built broad name recognition 3.
  • Competitors can run trade-in offers and tailored campaigns for devices with gaming-focused features to pull in these enthusiasts.
