ASML rises on Samsung, SK chip expansion plans

ASML Holding rose 6.8% to a record high in Amsterdam on June 30, while Applied Materials and KLA gained more than 5% in New York.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed 7.5% over two days.

The gains followed reports that South Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were linked to a four-fab expansion under an 800 trillion won (US$516 billion) plan, raising expectations of more supplier orders.

The package is a broader public-private commitment rather than direct spending on fabrication plants alone.

It accelerates existing projects while adding new capacity, with the four plants due for completion in the mid-2030s.

Part of the expansion includes the Yongin cluster, where SK Hynix’s first fabrication plant is expected to produce DRAM, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), highlighting the project’s focus on AI memory.

Investors are also watching execution.

Seoul said it would support power and water infrastructure and streamline approvals for chip projects, while analysts at Susquehanna, UBS Group, and JPMorgan Chase raised June forecasts for semiconductor equipment demand ahead of ASML’s July 15 earnings and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s July 16 earnings call.
