ASML CEO warns geopolitics may hurt innovation under US tariffs
ASML Holding NV, the sole producer of advanced semiconductor manufacturing machines, has raised concerns about rising geopolitical tensions affecting industry innovation.
CEO Christophe Fouquet said that export controls and geopolitical challenges are hindering collaboration but did not specifically address the newly announced US tariffs.
These tariffs, introduced by President Donald Trump, impose significant duties on imports from several countries, including the Netherlands, though semiconductors are excluded. Their impact on chip manufacturing tools remains uncertain.
ASML’s EUV lithography machines are crucial for high-end electronics. In 2024, about 16% of its net sales came from US-based facilities, but the company has not commented on potential effects.
Meanwhile, major customers like Intel, TSMC, and Samsung are expanding US operations due to incentives from the 2022 Chips and Science Act.
The Netherlands faces a 24% duty under the new tariffs, prompting the EU to consider retaliatory measures.
