ASML CEO says Dutch-China tensions haven’t affected operations
ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet said tensions between the Netherlands and China have not impacted the company’s operations in the short term.
ASML is a Dutch firm that supplies equipment used to make computer chips.
The comment comes after the Dutch government took control of Nexperia, a chipmaker with operations in both Europe and China, citing concerns over technology transfer.
This move caused supply disruptions for chips used in the automotive sector.
Fouquet said he believes the worst part of the dispute has passed.
He also noted the importance of dialogue before escalating situations.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
ASML’s China exposure is greater than the CEO’s comments suggest
- China made up 36% of ASML’s 2024 revenue 1. South Korea was 23%, the U.S. 16%, and Taiwan 15% 1. China is the largest market.
- Management sees China at about 20% in 2025 2. The 16 point drop puts billions in revenue at risk, even as ASML said it does not expect direct material impact in 2024 2.
- Chinese buyers pulled forward deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems before export limits in 2024 3. After the backlog thins, growth faces structural pressure past 2025 3.
The Nexperia crisis creates an opening for automotive chip redesign and supply chain services
- Nexperia sends roughly 60% of its output to car makers, including Volkswagen and Toyota 4. It holds about 40% in basic chips like transistors and diodes 4. Shortages hit commodity discrete parts, such as MOSFETs (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors) and ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection circuits used in autos 5.
- Automakers set up round the clock crisis coordination teams to manage shortages and find other chip sources 6. Distributors can source qualified replacements, while design engineering firms can rework systems to fit new specs 6.
- Analytics providers can give real time visibility that flags which vehicle models and lines face the highest risk from Nexperia gaps 6. OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and Tier‑1 suppliers (companies that supply major systems directly to automakers) can then target fixes to protect build schedules 6.
