ASML boost capacity as AI chip shortage deepens

Dutch company ASML, a leading supplier of lithography machines for chip manufacturing, has seen increased demand amid the AI chip shortage.

The company is planning to increase its production capacity to meet rising demand, which has contributed to its market valuation exceeding US$500 billion.

Analysts estimate that about 25% of chipmakers’ capital expenditure is directed toward lithography systems, primarily from ASML.

TSMC plans to raise its capital spending by 37% in 2026, while Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are also increasing their investments.

Industry experts see potential growth opportunities for ASML, including in China in 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The link between chipmaker spending and ASML’s revenue needs closer scrutiny

  • A direct tie between higher capex and ASML revenue is being assumed, but the share of those budgets going to ASML needs to be verified.
  • Chipmaker capex could be directed to fab shells, utilities, or mature-node tools rather than only the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems that are supplied exclusively by ASML 1.
  • In China, investment is being steered toward 28-nanometer production because of export curbs 2.
  • A “China business upside” is being discussed, yet ASML’s CEO has said China customer demand is expected to fall, so China total net sales in 2026 are expected to decline significantly versus 2024 and 2025 3.
  • The lag from outlays to sales should be tracked since new semiconductor fabs (fabrication plants) are often taken from 1.5 to 2 years from construction start to volume production, and delays are common 4.

ASML’s dominance masks parallel opportunities in the broader semiconductor supply chain

  • Fab construction growth reaches beyond ASML, so investors can also watch suppliers that outfit new sites.
  • When TSMC, Samsung, and Micron expand capacity, more orders can flow to toolmakers for etch (material removal) and deposition (material layering) equipment 5.
  • Capex totals can lift the wider semiconductor equipment market, not only lithography vendors.
  • More advanced chips also raise demand for inputs such as 300mm silicon wafers, specialty chemicals, and photoresists (light-sensitive materials used in lithography) used in these multi-billion dollar fabs 6.
