🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Peak XV framed the exit as a practical call

  • Peak XV confirmed Ashish Agrawal’s exit came after internal talks, ending with a decision it served the firm’s Limited Partners (the investors who provide capital to a VC fund) and long-term plans 1.
  • The backdrop includes Agrawal, Ishaan Mittal, and Tejeshwi Sharma gaining managing director roles in the same July 2021 cohort, which placed them in the next wave of leadership 2.
  • The group departure follows Peak XV’s formation after Sequoia Capital chose in June 2023 to run its India and China businesses as separate entities, during a stretch marked by founder concerns and portfolio governance issues 3.

Three managing directors leaving adds to VC spinout churn

  • All three managing directors exiting at once fits a wider spinout trend, where senior VC investors leave established firms to start new funds 1.
  • Peak XV oversees more than $9 billion and has said it holds USD 2.5 billion (INR 20,000 crore) in uninvested capital that can still back startups 4.
  • The new fund effort adds another bidder for startup deals, giving entrepreneurs more options from investors with a Sequoia India and Peak XV track record, since Peak XV is the former Sequoia Capital India & Southeast Asia 4.
