ASEAN to address US-China trade tensions at KL summit
Southeast Asian leaders will gather on May 26, 2025 in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the effects of rising United States-China trade tensions during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
A draft statement reviewed by Agence France-Presse revealed that the 10-member bloc expressed “deep concern” over the unilateral tariff measures imposed by the US, highlighting their potential to disrupt economic stability and growth in the region.
ASEAN, which relies heavily on trade with both the US and China, reaffirmed its commitment to global free trade.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the bloc this year, called for a unified ASEAN response to the tariff challenges.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining cohesion while engaging in bilateral discussions with Washington.
The ongoing summit will also feature high-level talks with China and Middle Eastern oil producers on May 27, 2025. Chinese Premier Li Qiang is expected to participate.
Observers note that Beijing is working to strengthen its ties with Southeast Asia, aiming to position itself as a reliable trading partner.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ ASEAN faces unprecedented economic pressure from tariffs despite its economic significance
The scale of economic disruption facing ASEAN from US tariffs is substantial, with targeted tariffs ranging from 10% to 54% threatening $476.8 billion in US-ASEAN trade1.
This economic pressure comes at a time when ASEAN has grown into a formidable economic bloc with a combined GDP of approximately $3.62 trillion as of 2022 and a population exceeding 700 million2.
The tariffs disproportionately affect export-dependent economies like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, threatening their economic growth models and potentially triggering job losses in manufacturing sectors3.
Small and medium enterprises, which make up over 90% of ASEAN businesses, face particular vulnerability due to their narrow margins and limited access to credit to weather the tariff-induced disruptions4.
Historical evidence suggests that while ASEAN has successfully navigated economic challenges before, the current situation presents a uniquely complex scenario where the bloc is caught between its two largest trading partners.
2️⃣ Shifting trade patterns reveal ASEAN’s strategic importance in global supply chains
