Arm hires Amazon chip exec in push to build own chips
Arm Holdings has hired Rami Sinno, an Amazon AI chip director, to support its push into building its own complete chips.
Sinno was responsible for developing Amazon’s AI chips, Trainium and Inferentia, which are used to build and run large AI applications.
Arm, based in the UK and majority-owned by SoftBank, is known for designing processor architecture used in nearly every smartphone and by chipmakers like Apple and Nvidia.
The company has traditionally sold chip designs, but in July disclosed plans to invest profits into developing its own chips and components.
CEO Rene Haas has discussed moving beyond designs to build chiplets and full systems.
As part of this effort, Arm has also hired Nicolas Dube from HPE and Steve Halter, a chip engineer with experience at Intel and Qualcomm.

Now Arm is moving toward building complete chips rather than just licensing designs, which could create tension with major customers who currently rely on Arm’s neutrality in the market.

Sinno’s background at Amazon highlights how vertical integration in chip design has become a competitive advantage for major cloud providers.
Amazon Web Services vertically integrated its chip design process by acquiring Annapurna Labs, allowing it to control the entire hardware and software stack from design to deployment2. This strategy enabled AWS to develop its Graviton processors and AI chips like Trainium and Inferentia as competitive alternatives to NVIDIA’s offerings2.
