Archer Aviation to supply powertrain tech for Anduril’s Omen drone

Archer Aviation has signed an agreement to supply its electric powertrain technology to Anduril Industries and Edge Group for use in Anduril’s new Omen autonomous air vehicle system.

Based in the US, Archer develops eVTOL aircraft and related technologies.

The United Arab Emirates has committed to buy 50 Omen systems, which will use Archer’s powertrains.

This deal is the first time Archer will provide its powertrain technology to another company, creating a new revenue stream.

Archer’s Midnight eVTOL, which uses the same powertrain, is designed for short passenger flights.

The partnership will help scale up production of the Omen and meet operational requirements.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

UAE offset rules could incentivize localization by Anduril/EDGE and suppliers (including Archer)

  • The UAE’s Tawazun Economic Program is a defense-industrial offset program 1. Contractors over a set contract value must earn offset credits (points for local economic contributions) equal to a percentage of the deal through investment in country, work packages with UAE suppliers, or technology transfer.
  • Guidelines updated in 2019 added strategic industries and dual-use technologies (civilian and military applications) 2. That scope fits electric powertrain expertise (motors, batteries, and control electronics that drive an aircraft).
  • The UAE plans an initial purchase of 50 Omen systems 3. That volume likely triggers obligations for the prime contractor. Anduril (a U.S. defense technology company) or EDGE (a UAE state-owned defense conglomerate) could set up local manufacturing, testing sites, or maintenance work with suppliers such as Archer.
  • Pressure will rise on Archer and partners to localize fast. Rivals with similar electric propulsion systems could win favor by meeting requirements sooner.

Third-party suppliers of charging infrastructure and battery testing equipment have an entry point

  • Large UAE defense buys trigger obligations that must be met through local partnerships and capacity building 1.
  • The Tawazun program applies credit multipliers that range from about 0.5 to 2 2. Higher factors give more credits per dollar of local activity, and officials can add bonuses for strategic value. Common projects include export work packages and local content development.
  • Suppliers of charging systems, battery management software, thermal testing gear, or maintenance robots for electric powertrains could partner with Anduril or EDGE to earn credits and secure recurring revenue.
  • Dual-use and strategic tech sit high on the program’s list 2. Electric aviation support infrastructure fits the credit model.
