Aramco’s VC arm invests $1.6m in Saudi subscription startup

Saudi Arabia-based subscription management platform Techrar has secured US$1.6 million in an investment round led by Wa’ed Ventures, the venture capital arm of Aramco.

This investment will be directed towards supporting Techrar’s plans in team growth, product development, and acquiring new customers.

The company was founded in 2022 by Safwan Saigh, Fawzan Alkhlawi, and Rania Shaker.

Techrar specializes in managing subscriptions, memberships, and recurring billing. The company plans to use the funding to expand its team, develop new products, and grow its customer base.

Operating in the ecommerce sector, Techrar aims to provide solutions that help businesses streamline operations.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Saudi Arabia is experiencing an unprecedented venture capital boom

Techrar’s funding comes amid a historic surge in Saudi venture investment, with the Kingdom securing 52% of all MENA venture capital in 2023, up from just 30% previously 1.

This represents a dramatic shift in regional investment dynamics, as Saudi Arabia has outpaced the UAE (traditionally the leader) with a remarkable 86% five-year CAGR in venture funding 1.

The $1.6 million investment in Techrar aligns with the Kingdom’s broader pattern of early-stage funding growth, which saw a 28% increase in early-stage rounds during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 2.

This investment climate is supported by strategic government initiatives under Vision 2030, which specifically targets reducing oil dependence through developing high-growth technology sectors 3.

The Saudi ecosystem has demonstrated resilience, with the country’s 8.7% GDP growth in 2022 providing a strong foundation for continued venture investment despite global economic uncertainties 4.

2️⃣ Subscription economy creating new opportunities for specialized local platforms

Techrar is positioning itself at the intersection of two growing business trends: the shift toward subscription-based revenue models and the need for localized financial technology solutions.

Global subscription management platforms like Zoho and Oracle are actively marketing to Saudi businesses 56, but Techrar offers the advantage of being built specifically for the Saudi market.
