AppsFlyer: Chinese apps pivot to ROI, not reach
AppsFlyer has released its 2025 China App Global Data Trends Report, offering a detailed look at how over 10,000 Chinese apps performed overseas from Q1 2023 to Q1 2025. The report analyzes 4.3 billion installs and US$280 million in advertising budgets, highlighting a strategic shift among Chinese developers in response to policy and market headwinds.
Key among these changes is a pivot from traffic-focused growth to sustainable user acquisition. The report attributes this to post-2021 developments such as Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, which disrupted attribution models and forced advertisers to rethink targeting. By Q1 2025, Chinese apps had regained ground on iOS, capturing a 6.69% share of global installations—signaling a return to growth after previous volatility.
Worldwide, annual app installs surged from 27 billion in 2018 to 75 billion in 2024. However, regional dynamics shifted. The Asia-Pacific region saw its share drop from 47.0% to 43.4%, while Latin America and the Middle East and Africa grew steadily. The U.S. emerged as a standout market, rising to 12.1% of global installs, and is now one of the most important targets for Chinese developers.
Meanwhile, emerging markets like the Philippines, Mexico, and Nigeria are becoming growth hotspots thanks to low competition and favorable demographics. User acquisition costs, which peaked in Q3 2023, have since stabilized, reflecting a more calculated approach to global expansion.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The decade-long evolution of Chinese apps’ global strategy
Chinese app developers have undergone a profound strategic shift in their approach to global markets over the past decade.
The journey began with a “traffic dividend period” around 2016 dominated by utility apps seeking quick global expansion, as shown by utility apps still accounting for 29% of global installs of Chinese apps in recent years1.
By 2021-2022, gaming and content apps had risen to prominence, with Chinese-developed games like PUBG and Genshin Impact each generating over $1 billion in revenue globally1.
The introduction of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) in 2021 forced a strategic reset, creating what AppsFlyer terms the “structural reshaping period” where developers had to prioritize ROI recovery cycles over raw user acquisition.
This evolution demonstrates how Chinese developers have matured from opportunistic global expansion to sophisticated, metrics-driven operations that can adapt to regulatory changes while maintaining growth.
2️⃣ Shifting regional dynamics reshape Chinese apps’ global footprint
The global landscape for Chinese app installations has undergone significant geographical restructuring in recent years.
While the Asia-Pacific region has seen its share of global installations decrease from 47.0% to 43.4%, emerging markets in Latin America and Africa have gained prominence with share increases of 3.0% and 1.9% respectively.
