Applied Materials unveils AI chip hub with TSMC, Intel
Applied Materials, a US-based semiconductor equipment supplier, said on October 13 it unveiled the EPIC Center in Sunnyvale, California.
The facility is intended to bring chipmakers, equipment suppliers, and university researchers together to develop chipmaking technologies for AI.
The company said the center spans 600,000 square feet and includes nearly four acres of cleanroom space for semiconductor process technology and manufacturing equipment research.
Founding partners include TSMC, Intel, Samsung, Micron, and SK hynix.
Research partners include Arizona State University, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Applied Materials said capital spending is expected to reach about US$5 billion over time as customer projects begin.
It did not provide a detailed spending breakdown or a fixed timeline.
A public US CHIPS Program Office page lists Applied Materials in Santa Clara, but the material reviewed does not establish whether incentives support the Sunnyvale project.
