Apple's iPhone Air designer moves to AI startup

Abidur Chowdhury, an industrial designer who helped develop the iPhone Air, has left Apple for an AI startup, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Chowdhury, who joined Apple in 2019, appeared in the company’s September launch video for the iPhone Air, a prominent role within the design group.

His departure follows a series of exits from Apple’s design team since the exit of former chief designer Jony Ive.

Apple’s design group, based in Cupertino, California, has seen most of its prior members leave or retire, with the team now made up largely of new hires and junior staff.

Jeff Williams, Apple’s longtime chief operating officer who had overseen the design team, also left the company last week.

Apple said in July that design teams would report directly to CEO Tim Cook after Williams’ departure.

Chowdhury’s exit is not linked to the launch of the iPhone Air, which saw positive design feedback but slow sales.

Apple declined to comment.
