Apple’s India sales reach $9b after retail expansion

Apple’s annual revenue in India reached almost US$9 billion in the 12 months through March 2025, up about 13% from US$8 billion the previous year.

The majority of sales came from iPhones, with MacBook demand also rising.

Apple opened two new stores in Bangalore and Pune this week, and plans additional outlets in Noida and Mumbai, with the Mumbai store expected early next year.

India became its own sales region for Apple in 2023 as the company increased its focus on the market.

Apple iPhones now hold about 7% of India’s smartphone market, reflecting growing local demand.

The company has also ramped up local manufacturing, with one in five iPhones now produced in India as Apple diversifies production away from China.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Apple’s India transformation shows how patient market development can yield exponential returns

  • Apple’s decade-long journey in India demonstrates remarkable growth acceleration after years of modest progress.
  • The company sold just over 1 million iPhones total by 2014 and held only 2.5% market share as recently as 2018, yet reached $9 billion in annual sales by 202412.
  • This represents a revenue increase of roughly 1,800% from the early estimates of $500 million in 2013 to nearly $9 billion today, showing how sustained investment in challenging markets can eventually pay off3.
  • The transformation required Apple to adapt its premium positioning strategy, introducing local manufacturing through partners like Wistron to reduce costs and meet government requirements4.
  • Despite iPhones still commanding a premium—costing $906 in India versus $799 in the US—Apple found ways to drive adoption through financing partnerships and trade-in programs.

India has evolved from Apple’s sales target to a critical manufacturing stronghold

  • Apple’s manufacturing shift to India represents one of the most significant supply chain realignments in recent corporate history.
  • India became the top smartphone exporter to the US in Q2 2025, capturing 44% of imports compared to just 13% the previous year, largely driven by Apple’s production ramp-up5.
  • The volume of smartphones manufactured in India surged 240% year-over-year, with one in every five iPhones now produced there across five facilities5.
  • This shift serves Apple’s “China Plus One” diversification strategy, as the company aims to have the majority of US-bound iPhones originate from India by 20266.
  • The transformation positions India not just as a growing consumer market but as a strategic export hub, reducing Apple’s manufacturing concentration risk while capitalizing on India’s Production Linked Incentives program.
