Carol Surface, Apple’s chief people officer, is leaving the company after less than two years in the role.

Sources with knowledge of the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the absence of a public statement, confirmed the news on Wednesday, while the reasons for Surface’s departure are not publicly clarified.

Surface joined Apple in early 2023, succeeding Deirdre O’Brien, who previously oversaw both human resources and retail operations.

After Surface’s departure, O’Brien will return to her previous dual role, managing both teams again.

Surface held a newly established position at Apple, supervising human resources, inclusion, diversity, and recruitment for the company’s roughly 160,000 employees.

Surface’s tenure is particularly short for an executive of her rank at Apple, a company known for its consistent leadership.

Currently, several key executives are departing: Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri plans to resign by year’s end, and other significant figures, including Dan Riccio and Matt Fischer, are also concluding their roles.
