Apple’s App Store changes may win EU antitrust nod

Apple’s recent changes to its App Store rules are likely to receive approval from EU antitrust regulators. The updates aim to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and avoid daily fines.

In April, the European Commission fined Apple €500 million (US$587 million) for restricting developers from directing users to cheaper payment options outside the App Store.

Apple was given 60 days to respond.

The new rules include a 20% in-app purchase processing fee, reduced to 13% for small-business program participants.

Developers who direct users to external payments will face fees between 5% and 15%. Apple will no longer restrict the number of external links.

The European Commission is still reviewing the changes. “All options remain on the table. We are still assessing Apple’s proposed changes,” it said.
