Apple weighs paying publishers for Siri AI content
Apple is reportedly in talks to pay publishers for content used to power an upcoming Siri AI, with discussions taking place in recent months.
Apple reportedly proposed a variable model that would pay publishers when their content is used, rather than a fixed licensing fee, and has considered a nine-figure budget.
Apple said Siri AI would be able to answer questions using current web information as part of its Apple Intelligence rollout across devices and apps.
That would add to Apple’s existing relationships with publishers through Apple News, where eligible outlets can receive a 15% commission on qualifying subscriptions, along with ad revenue sharing.
It would also differ from many AI-publisher deals so far, which have generally been multi-year, fixed-sum arrangements.
One reported agreement was worth up to US$250 million over five years.
The talks come as AI companies face copyright disputes over alleged unlicensed use of published works, including a claim involving more than 17,000 stories.
