Apple Watch may get built-in cameras for AI features
Apple is developing new Apple Watch models with integrated cameras to support AI features, according to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter. The functionality, called “Visual Intelligence,” is expected within the next two years.
Standard models will have cameras embedded in the display, while the Apple Watch Ultra will place them near the digital crown.
These cameras will help the watch “see the outside world” and provide contextual AI-powered insights.
The Visual Intelligence feature, already on the iPhone 16, lets users extract event details from flyers and search for restaurant information using the camera.
Apple plans to use its own AI models to enhance these capabilities by 2027. The company is also working on camera-equipped AirPods and AR glasses, though the latter is still in early development.
Mike Rockwell oversees the AI advancements for Apple’s wearables and is also leading the visionOS software development. He was assigned to accelerate Siri’s large language model upgrade.
