Apple to unveil iOS 27 AI tools at June event
Apple plans new AI features for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, which it is expected to unveil at its WWDC event in June before a public release in September, as it tries to close the gap with Google and Samsung in AI.
The updates include a grammar checker similar to Grammarly, a Shortcuts upgrade that lets users build automations with natural language, and AI tools for generating wallpapers.
Apple is also preparing a Siri mode that can analyze visual data through the camera, new Photos editing tools, and a redesigned Siri with deeper app controls, while Google recently introduced Android 17 and new Gemini features including AI widget creation.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Apple’s AI plan leans on partnerships
- Apple is trying to catch up with Google and Samsung, while also working with other AI companies.
- It brings OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri, Writing Tools, and Shortcuts. ChatGPT also appears in visual intelligence plus Image Playground. People can choose when ChatGPT is used, and Apple asks before sharing information 1.
- Siri’s deeper app controls rely on developers using frameworks such as App Intents plus related application programming interfaces (APIs). These include Assistant Schemas and App Intent domains, which let Siri act inside third-party apps 2.
AI in phones could reshape software pricing
- Apple Intelligence comes at no extra charge on supported devices, though the technology behind it is costly 3. Operating ChatGPT costs an estimated US$700,000 a day 4.
- That expense puts pressure on phone makers plus software companies to find new ways to charge for AI tools.
- Galaxy AI features were offered free through the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices. Different terms may apply to third-party AI features 4.
- The likely result is a tiered model. Basic tasks on the device stay free, while stronger cloud features move into subscriptions.
