Apple to open new manufacturing academy in Detroit on August 19
Apple will open its all-new Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit on August 19, offering free training programs for American businesses, innovators, and manufacturers.
Apple is a US-based technology company known for products such as the iPhone, Mac, and iPad.
The academy is part of Apple’s announced plan to invest over US$ 500 billion in the US over four years.
In partnership with Michigan State University, Apple will provide workshops to small and medium-sized businesses from across the US, focusing on advanced manufacturing, AI, and smart manufacturing.
Courses will cover topics including machine learning in manufacturing, automation, data-driven quality improvement, and digital operations.
Apple engineers are already offering consulting services to American companies, both in person and virtually.
Later this year, the academy plans to add virtual programming with training in skills such as project management and process optimization.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Apple’s academy addresses a critical manufacturing workforce shortage
The Detroit academy arrives as American manufacturing faces an unprecedented skills gap, with the sector projected to need 4.6 million new jobs by 20281.
This shortage is particularly acute in advanced manufacturing technologies like AI and automation, which are the focus areas Apple is targeting with its workshops on machine learning, deep learning, and smart manufacturing techniques.
Manufacturing currently contributes US$2.93 trillion to the U.S. economy and supports over 13 million jobs with average salaries exceeding $102,0002, making workforce development in this sector especially valuable for economic growth.
Apple’s timing reflects both opportunity and necessity. While manufacturing companies perform over half of all domestic research and development2, many lack the skilled workforce to implement cutting-edge technologies that could drive productivity gains.
2️⃣ The academy reinforces Apple’s massive domestic supply chain investments
Apple’s Manufacturing Academy supports the company’s broader commitment to spend $350 billion in the U.S. economy over five years3, with a significant portion flowing through its supply chain relationships.
