Apple to invest $100b more in US, total hits $600b

Apple will invest an additional US$100 billion in the US, bringing its total domestic investment commitment to US$600 billion, President Donald Trump announced on August 6.

The new investment focuses on expanding Apple’s supply chain and advanced manufacturing presence in the US.

However, final assembly of iPhones will continue overseas for now, according to CEO Tim Cook.

Trump has pressured Apple to manufacture iPhones domestically and recently threatened a 25% tariff on products made abroad, reversing earlier exemptions for electronics.

Analysts say Apple’s investment pledge is consistent with its typical spending and previous commitments.

Most Apple products, including iPhones and iPads, are still produced in Asia, with some manufacturing shifted to Vietnam, Thailand, and India in recent years.

Partners in the new investment include Corning, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments, GlobalFoundries, and Broadcom.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Apple’s investment announcements follow a familiar political pattern

Apple’s latest $100 billion commitment mirrors a strategy the company deployed during Trump’s first presidency, when it announced a $350 billion investment over five years in January 20181.

Both announcements came during periods of heightened trade tensions and political pressure to increase domestic manufacturing.

The pattern suggests Apple uses these large-scale investment pledges as a diplomatic tool to maintain favorable relationships with the administration while buying time to avoid immediate policy changes.

However, the article notes Apple’s mixed execution record, citing how a 2019 Texas factory tour with Trump was promoted as new manufacturing but had actually been producing Apple computers since 2013 before production moved to Thailand.

This reveals a gap between Apple’s public commitments and actual operational changes, indicating these announcements may serve more strategic than operational purposes.

2️⃣ Current tariff environment makes domestic investment more urgent than previous cycles
