Apple said on Aug. 18 that from Oct. 1 it will charge a 5% commission on digital goods and services sold by apps distributed through third-party app stores or the web in the European Union, under revised terms responding to disputes over the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Apps using Apple’s payment system will pay 26%, while those using their own payment systems will pay 20%.

Apps that direct users to the web to complete a purchase will pay 15%, while apps distributed through third-party app stores or the web will pay 5%.

The DMA requires Apple to let developers direct users to offers outside the App Store and support alternative app stores and direct web downloads on iPhones in the EU.

The European Commission fined Apple 500 million euros (US$579 million) in April over anti-steering rules.

The new pricing structure replaces Apple’s earlier EU model, which centered on a 0.50 euros (US$0.58) Core Technology Fee on first annual app installs above 1 million.

Scrutiny in the EU is continuing. The Commission said its investigation into Apple’s terms for alternative app distribution remains open.
