Apple targets September debut for foldable iPhone

Apple plans to unveil its first foldable iPhone in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and aims to start sales around the same time or soon after, people familiar with the matter said.

The launch timeline suggests the device remains on track despite earlier concerns about potential delays during testing.

Initial supply may be limited for several weeks because of the display and materials, and the launch timing could still change because production has not yet ramped up.

The foldable device is expected to cost more than $2,000 and would give Apple its first entry into a category already served by Samsung and Chinese smartphone makers.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The expected price reflects expensive, custom-built parts

  • The foldable screen drives much of the bill. Apple pays Samsung Display about $250 per panel, more than the foldable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens used in Samsung Electronics devices 1.
  • The higher price covers a custom, “crease-free” design that Apple pursued “regardless of cost.” It uses a liquid metal (amorphous metal) hinge plus ultra-thin glass. Lens Technology, a Chinese supplier of glass components, is a possible supplier for that glass 2.
  • A report cited by CNET says Hon Hai Technology Group, better known as Foxconn, set up a production line to build several dozen foldable iPhone units for testing before mass production begins 3.

The foldable launch fits reports that Apple is focusing more on its most expensive iPhones

  • A trading-focused podcast summary describes a “premium-first” roadmap for 2026. It puts Apple’s highest-end iPhone models first, including its first foldable device, and shifts the standard iPhone 18 to the first half of 2027 4.
  • The same summary says the schedule aims to protect profit plus reduce the risk of producing a more complex foldable device. It says a delayed mass-market iPhone model could weaken upgrade cycles for carriers such as AT&T and Verizon 4.
  • The foldable timing also lines up with a multi-year Apple hardware plan focused on redesigns, including an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air in 2025 plus an all-glass 20th anniversary edition in 2027 5.
