Apple takes bigger control of iPhone chips to boost AI

Apple’s latest iPhone lineup, including the new iPhone Air, went on sale on September 19 with a focus on AI and in-house chip design.

The company introduced the A19 Pro chip, which adds neural accelerators to each GPU core to improve AI processing, and debuted its first wireless chip for iPhone, the N1, as well as a new in-house modem, the C1X.

Apple previously relied on Broadcom and Qualcomm for wireless and modem chips, but the N1 and C1X mark a shift toward controlling key hardware components.

The N1 chip is included across the iPhone 17 series, while the C1X modem appears in the iPhone Air, with Qualcomm modems still present in other models.

Analysts expect Apple to eventually move all core chips in its devices to its own designs.

The A19 Pro’s architecture is built to handle on-device AI more efficiently, and the company plans to manufacture some custom chips at TSMC’s Arizona facility once production is ready.
