Apple suspends AI news summaries amid accuracy concerns

Apple has suspended its AI-powered news summarization feature after complaints from media outlets regarding inaccuracies.

Apple confirmed that AI notification summaries for the News & Entertainment category will be temporarily unavailable in iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3 beta versions.

Apple will also add italicized text to alert users about potential issues, indicating that this is a beta feature so they can manage notifications directly from the lock screen.

This comes after the BBC filed a formal complaint after the AI incorrectly summarized a story about Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive officer Brian Thompson, stating he had died by suicide.

The UK’s National Union of Journalists also voiced concerns, calling for more accurate reporting.
