Apple sidesteps AI in China talks
Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Jin Zhuanglong, China’s industry and information technology minister, to discuss the company’s progress in the Chinese market.
The official statement from China did not include details about Apple’s AI plans.
The meeting covered data security, cloud services, and future growth in China. However, Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI service scheduled to launch elsewhere, was not mentioned.
China requires government approval for public AI releases, with 188 applications approved by August from local companies.
Analysts suggest that the absence of Apple Intelligence in China could affect iPhone sales as competitors focus on AI features.
Speculation arose about Cook’s meeting being related to AI negotiations, spurred by comments on social media.
The Chinese regulator said Cook expressed a desire to increase investment in China and improve Apple’s supply chain.
