Apple shifts new headset production from China to Vietnam

Apple’s new Vision Pro headset with the M5 processor is being assembled in Vietnam, marking a shift from the original model’s production in China.

The packaging for the latest Vision Pro, which launches October, indicates it is a “Product of Vietnam.” It remains unclear whether all units are made in Vietnam or if some are still produced in China.

Apple continues to assemble most iPhones in China but has increased production in other countries.

The company now builds most AirPods and Apple Watches in Vietnam and has shifted the majority of US-bound iPhone supply to India.

Some iPads, HomePods, and Mac models are also made in Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Vietnam assembly may not cut Vision Pro tariff risk

  • Shifting assembly to Vietnam may not change origin for U.S. tariffs under Section 301 (punitive tariffs on certain Chinese goods). The rule covers goods that start in China, wherever they ship 1.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sets origin by “substantial transformation” (a significant change in name or character or use from processing) not the assembly site 2.
  • If core parts come from China and work in Vietnam does not create substantial transformation, value added stays small. Section 301 duties can still apply even with a “Product of Vietnam” label.
  • Section 301 tariffs on Chinese electronics remain in force. CBP is tightening origin checks and cross-checking filings with supply chain databases 2.

Compliance tech can target Apple’s growing Vietnam supplier base

  • Apple’s Vietnam supplier list rose from 27 to 35 from 2022 to 2024. Foxconn, a contract manufacturer, put $300 million into new Vietnam sites 3.
  • Suppliers must prove country-of-origin compliance as CBP cases involving the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) rose from 6 in 2021 to 20 in 2024. They need traceability tools that log each production stage and part-level input 2.
  • Software firms that handle country-of-origin documents, manufacturing execution systems (shop-floor production tracking software), and supply chain digitalization can serve Apple-adjacent manufacturers in Vietnam 2.
  • Vietnam is upgrading customs systems with electronic certificates of origin and the ASEAN Customs Transit System (a regional platform that standardizes cross-border transit procedures). That shift creates near-term demand for compliance infrastructure 2.
