Apple and BYD established a secret partnership over the past six years to develop long-range lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for a canceled EV project.

Reports indicate that the collaboration, which began around 2017, involved notable technological contributions from both teams and an annual investment by Apple nearing US$1 billion.

Initially, Apple sought key technologies to support its automotive goals, leading to discussions with BYD engineers who showcased early versions of the Blade battery.

The technology was recognized for its enhanced safety and energy storage capabilities, impressing Apple executives.
