Apple said to develop tabletop robot for 2027 release

Apple is reportedly developing a tabletop robot companion aimed for release in 2027, according to Bloomberg.

The device is described as a display on a robotic arm that can swivel to face users as they move.

It will feature voice assistant capabilities and a new operating system called Charismatic.

A simpler smart home hub without robotic movement may arrive in 2026. It will include functions such as music control, note-taking, web browsing, and video-conferencing.

Both devices are expected to support multiple users and offer an updated version of Siri.

The final design and visual elements are still being tested.

Apple has previously explored smart home and robotics products, but it could still alter or cancel these projects before launch.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Apple’s acquisition strategy reveals methodical preparation for emerging categories

Apple’s rumored smart home devices reflect a pattern of strategic preparation through targeted acquisitions that spans nearly a decade.

Since 2010, Apple has made numerous acquisitions in AI, computer vision, and augmented reality, with activity notably increasing after 20141. The company has completed 11 acquisitions with disclosed valuations over $100 million since 2010, primarily targeting early-stage Series A startups in these emerging technologies1.

This methodical approach aligns with what researchers call Apple’s “Quantum Strategy,” focusing on serial innovation within narrow product lines to concentrate management attention and resources2.

The current smart home push appears to be the culmination of years of capability building, similar to how Apple’s $3 billion Beats acquisition in 2014 laid groundwork for later audio innovations1.

Apple’s acquisition of companies specializing in speech recognition, facial recognition, and computer vision, all essential for the rumored tabletop robot’s functionality, demonstrates how the company builds technical foundations years before product launches1.

2️⃣ On-device processing positions Apple differently in competitive smart home market
