Apple rolls out AI tools in software update
Apple revealed a range of AI updates during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
The updates include features such as live translations for phone calls and enhancements to the Image Playground app, which now allows image generation using OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, announced that the company will open its on-device large language model to third-party developers. He assured that user data would not be shared with OpenAI without user consent.
Apple will also provide developers access to its own tools, in addition to those from competitors like OpenAI.
Analysts observed that Apple’s AI advancements are less aggressive than those of its competitors. Thomas Monteiro, a senior analyst at Investing.com, characterized the new features as “incremental” and noted the increasing pressure on Apple to enhance its AI offerings.
Apple clarified that developers will only access its on-device AI model, which has a capacity of 3 billion parameters, smaller than cloud-based models, which limits its capability to manage complex tasks.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Apple’s privacy-focused approach creates AI development tradeoffs
Apple’s cautious AI rollout reflects its longstanding privacy-centric business model, which stands in contrast to competitors’ strategies.
While companies like Google and OpenAI leverage vast amounts of user data to train large language models, Apple emphasizes on-device processing and federated learning to protect privacy, as seen with its Siri improvements 1.
This approach creates technical constraints. The article notes Apple’s on-device model is just 3 billion parameters, significantly smaller than cloud-based alternatives that can handle more complex tasks.
The limitation helps explain why analysts view Apple’s AI features as “incremental at best” compared to competitors, with Thomas Monteiro noting “the clock is ticking faster every day for Apple” in the AI race.
Apple’s strategy prioritizes user trust over cutting-edge capabilities, a decision that maintains its brand reputation but risks falling behind in AI innovation.
2️⃣ Apple shifts from closed ecosystem to developer partnerships
Apple’s decision to open its foundational AI model to third-party developers represents a significant strategic pivot for a company known for tightly controlling its ecosystem.
