Apple reportedly delays iPhone Air launch until 2027

Apple has reportedly delayed the launch of its next iPhone Air, with no new model expected in fall 2026.

The company introduced the first iPhone Air, a thinner version of its smartphone, in September 2025, but has since reduced its production.

Plans for the second-generation device included a lighter build, improved battery, and a vapor chamber similar to the iPhone 17 Pro series.

IPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s foldable phone reportedly are still expected for fall 2026, while the iPhone 18 and 18E could launch in spring 2027.

Sources say Apple may still release the new iPhone Air as early as spring 2027, but no official timeline has been confirmed.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Production cuts and delay signal weak iPhone Air demand

  • Apple cut iPhone Air output soon after launch and pushed back the sequel, per The Information, hinting the ultra-thin pitch fell flat despite sellouts in China 1.
  • In China, base iPhone 17 nearly doubled iPhone 16 sales in first 10 days 2. The Air saw niche demand with a price-to-spec gap 2 (i.e., the features and performance didn’t justify the premium).
  • The first iPhone Air lacked a vapor chamber (a sealed flat heat-spreader that moves heat via liquid evaporation and condensation), which likely hurt thermals versus Pro models that use one 34.
  • A slip to spring 2027 could let Apple try a vapor chamber like iPhone 17 Pro’s 3 plus a better battery, per The Information, to test if the Air can carry a premium or needs a rethink.

Vapor chamber suppliers face 2026 capacity risk

  • Apple reportedly picked Asia Vital Components of Taiwan and Suzhou Tianmai of China for iPhone 17 Pro vapor chambers 5. An Air 2 delay could pull expected 2026 runs.
  • Vapor chambers need tight sealing plus specialized tooling 4, so idle capacity gets costly and could spur discounts. Procurement teams can press for better pricing in H2 2026 by targeting vendors with stranded Apple capacity, similar to channel discounts (retail and carrier promotions) that boosted iPhone 17 conversions 2.
  • Investors should watch whether these companies pivot to AI server cooling demand 5 or face margin pressure from underused phone thermal lines through 2026.
