Apple readies camera-equipped AirPods for AI push
Apple is in late-stage development of AirPods with built-in cameras.
The prototypes now in design validation testing ahead of production as the company expands its AI hardware lineup.
The low-resolution cameras would send visual data to Siri instead of capturing photos or videos, allowing users to ask about nearby objects.
A small LED light would turn on whenever data is uploaded to the cloud.
Apple had aimed to release the device in the first half of 2026 but delayed it after setbacks to a revamped Siri.
The company is expected to release it in September after Apple updated its models with Google Gemini technology.
The launch could slip further if the visual AI features do not meet its standards.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods could tap a fast-growing wellness market
- The global earbuds market could reach 1.21 billion units by 2031, with wellness features driving much of that growth 1.
- Fitness is the fastest-growing use for earbuds. It is projected to grow at a 19.21% compound annual rate as more people use them for health tracking 1.
- Apple has already been pushing AirPods toward health use. Lumafield (an industrial CT scanning and teardown firm) said it found a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor in an AirPods Pro (3rd Generation) teardown. A PPG sensor uses light to estimate heart rate 2.
- Adding a camera would take that further by bringing visual input into the audio and biometric data the earbuds already gather.
A new hardware push could tighten the Apple-Google AI tie-up
- The device could pull Apple closer to Google. Apple and Google say the next generation of Apple Foundation Models (Apple’s in-house AI models) will use Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. Those tools are set to support future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri due this year 3.
- The partnership could give Google a clearer sense of the questions asked across Apple’s 2.5 billion active devices. That could help Google train its models even without specific user data 4.
- Apple’s choice of Google over OpenAI and other AI startups would strengthen Google’s position in AI 4.
- That reliance could also bring antitrust attention, similar to the companies’ long-running default search deal 5.
