Apple plans Siri AI mode for iPhone camera in iOS 27
Apple plans to add a Siri-branded AI mode to the iPhone camera app in iOS 27, moving its Visual Intelligence tool from the Camera Control button into the main camera interface.
Apple is also testing features to scan nutrition labels and capture contact details, with the changes set for preview at WWDC in June before a wider release this fall.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Siri’s camera mode previews Apple’s next devices
- The new camera tool may lay the groundwork for a broader set of AI-driven Apple products, rather than sitting as a simple software add-on 1.
- Apple is working on smart glasses, a wearable pendant, plus camera-ready AirPods to feed live visual context into an updated Siri 1.
- Those products may act as the iPhone’s extra senses. The glasses are meant to work all day as an AI companion that understands what someone is looking at 1.
- Putting visual AI in the main camera app first lets Apple tune the experience before dedicated gear arrives, including smart glasses it is targeting for 2027 1.
Apple wants the iPhone to host many AI assistants
- Adding services such as ChatGPT fits a broader plan to make the iPhone a hub for competing AI assistants, instead of relying on one provider 2.
- Apple plans to let iPhone owners pick which AI service handles a request, which could bring options such as Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude into Siri 2.
- That approach may turn competition into income, since Apple could collect a share of subscriptions sold through outside AI services 2.
- It also sets up an AI app marketplace where developers build focused agents that users can pick as a default inside Apple’s ecosystem 2.
