Apple to pay $250m to settle Siri AI lawsuit
Apple agreed on May 5 to pay US$250 million to settle a shareholder lawsuit in California over delayed AI upgrades for Siri that it had promoted for new iPhones launched in late 2024.
The suit, filed in 2024 by shareholder Peter Landsheft in US federal court, said Apple advertised the features after unveiling them at its 2024 developer conference but shipped the phones without them, harming investors.
Apple did not admit wrongdoing, and the settlement still needs a judge’s approval.
The company said in 2025 that the Siri overhaul would be delayed until 2026 and later confirmed the features would be presented at its developer conference next month.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The US$250 million settlement joins other Siri legal fights
- A separate consumer class-action lawsuit said iPhone buyers were misled by delayed Siri AI features used in iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 marketing 1.
- Apple also agreed to another class-action settlement over Siri privacy claims that said the assistant recorded confidential conversations without user consent 2.
- Apple is expected to preview a Siri overhaul at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple’s annual developer event, in 2026 with iOS 27 and macOS 27. The update would give Siri deeper system ties and may include a standalone app to better match chatbot-style assistants 3.
Apple’s AI plan leans on tight ecosystem control
- Apple faces pressure to make Siri more competitive after delays to promised upgrades 4.
- The broader revamp for iOS 27 and macOS 27 would turn Siri into a systemwide AI agent across apps. It would also use personal context from emails, messages, and notes 3.
- The design fits Apple’s privacy focus, including on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, which handles requests that need larger AI models 5.
- A stronger privacy-first model for AI could shape how rival tech companies roll out generative AI features.
