Apple ordered to pay US medtech firm Masimo $634m in patent case
A US federal jury in California found that Apple owes Masimo US$634 million for infringing a patent related to blood-oxygen reading technology in its smartwatches.
Masimo said the jury found that features in the Apple Watch, including workout mode and heart rate notifications, violated its patent rights.
Apple said it disagrees with the verdict and plans to appeal.
The case is part of a larger dispute between the two companies, including a 2023 US trade tribunal decision that blocked imports of Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 models.
Apple removed blood-oxygen features to avoid the ban and reintroduced updated technology in August with US Customs approval.
The US International Trade Commission is reviewing whether the updated watches should face import restrictions, while Masimo continues legal action and Apple challenges the ban in federal court.
