A US jury in San Diego ordered Apple to pay more than US$5.7 billion to Taction, a San Diego-based company that develops haptic technology for products such as headphones and gaming headsets.

The jury found that Apple’s Taptic Engine in iPhones and Apple Watches infringed two Taction patents.

Apple said it would appeal. The company said at trial that its Taptic Engine differs from Taction’s technology and does not use it.

Taction sued Apple in 2021. The case was revived in 2025 after the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned a 2023 ruling by a San Diego federal judge that Apple had not infringed the patents.

The award was far above the US$634 million that Masimo won in a separate Apple Watch patent dispute.
