Apple nears India antitrust ruling over App Store rules

Apple has agreed to submit the financials of its India business to the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

The company received a final extension until June 25.

The move brings the case closer to a possible penalty decision over Apple’s App Store rules in India.

A 2024 CCI investigation found Apple abused its dominant position in the market for app distribution on Apple’s iOS in India, calling the App Store an “unavoidable trading partner” for app developers.

The probe focused on Apple’s requirement that developers use its in-app payment system for digital purchases, with commissions of up to 30%.

Under India’s amended competition law, the CCI can impose penalties of up to 10% of a company’s average turnover or income over the previous three years.

In a similar case, the CCI in 2022 fined Google 9.4 billion rupees (US$98.3 million) over Play Store billing and anti-steering restrictions.

An appellate tribunal later cut the penalty to about 2.2 billion rupees (US$22.8 million).

Counterpoint Research data showed Apple’s iPhone share in India rose to 9% from about 2% five years ago.
