Apple launches M5 chip in iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, Vision Pro

Apple has introduced its new M5 chip, which the company says delivers over four times the peak GPU compute performance for AI tasks compared to its previous M4 chip.

The M5 is built on third-generation 3-nanometer technology and features a 10-core GPU with a neural accelerator in each core, a CPU with up to 10 cores, and a 16-core neural engine.

Apple said the M5 achieves up to 45% higher graphics performance and 15% faster multithreaded CPU performance than the M4.

The chip supports a unified memory bandwidth of 153GB/s, nearly 30% higher than the previous generation.

Apple is rolling out the M5 in the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro, all available for pre-order.

The company also highlighted the chip’s improved energy efficiency, which it said supports its broader sustainability goals.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

  • ‘4x AI performance’ refers to peak GPU compute versus M4, achieved by putting a Neural Accelerator in each of the 10 GPU cores and spreading AI work across them plus the 16‑core Neural Engine (a dedicated on‑chip AI processor) 1.
  • Apple cites up to 3.5x using a 16K‑token prompt (tokens are chunks of text processed by a language model) with an 8 billion parameter model (parameter count is a rough proxy for model size), though independent checks of LLM tokens per second or diffusion throughput remain limited 2.
  • Unified memory lets the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine share a pool that enables larger AI models to run locally versus discrete GPUs (standalone graphics cards) with separate video memory (VRAM) 3
