Apple joins RedNote to target China’s tech-savvy audience

Apple has launched an official account on RedNote, a Chinese social platform, as it seeks to boost its brand presence in China ahead of the iPhone 17 launch.

The company’s verified RedNote account gained over 200,000 followers since its first post on Aug 16.

RedNote, which has a young and tech-focused user base, became widely known in the US earlier this year after TikTok users joined the platform during discussions of a potential TikTok ban.

Apple’s first post was an animated video of its logo and invited users to share stories, but did not mention any products.

Apple also maintains official accounts on WeChat, Douyin, and Weibo in China, with CEO Tim Cook and Apple Support both active on Weibo.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Apple follows methodical approach to Chinese social media expansion

Apple’s entry into RedNote continues a systematic six-year strategy of establishing presence across major Chinese social platforms, rather than rushing into new networks.

The company first joined WeChat in 2018, added Douyin in 2022, and has maintained CEO Tim Cook’s personal Weibo account since 2015 with 1.8 million followers.

This measured approach reflects lessons learned from past missteps in China, including the 2019 controversy when Apple removed a Hong Kong protest tracking app after Chinese state media criticism 1.

The methodical rollout suggests Apple prioritizes long-term relationship building with Chinese authorities and users over rapid market entry.

With Chinese consumers spending over 1.5 hours daily on social media and 91% maintaining at least one social account, this platform diversification strategy targets China’s highly engaged 1.05 billion internet users 2.

2️⃣ Strategic timing capitalizes on RedNote’s explosive user growth momentum

Apple’s RedNote debut comes as the platform experiences unprecedented international attention, gaining 3 million new US users in a single day amid TikTok uncertainty 3.

This surge has pushed RedNote to become the top free app on US app stores, creating a unique moment where Chinese and American users are actively discovering the platform together 4.
