Apple Intelligence nears launch on iPhones in China
China’s internet regulator said on July 15 that Apple’s Shanghai unit completed a filing on July 8 for Apple Intelligence on iPhones, potentially clearing a regulatory step before the AI features can launch on devices sold in China.
The Cyberspace Administration of China published the filing on its WeChat account in a list of seven generative AI services provided on mobile devices.
China’s generative AI rules cover public-facing services that generate text, images, audio, video, and other content.
Compliance guidance says such services need to file before launch.
Apple Intelligence includes a revamped Siri and tools to organize emails and summarize audio.
But its initial rollout was limited to devices set to US English, excluding China, as Apple navigated mainland rules on large language models and data handling.
Alibaba Group chairman Joe Tsai said earlier that Apple had talked with several Chinese companies before choosing Alibaba to power phones there.
