Apple in talks with Indian chipmaker on iPhone parts: sources
Apple is in early talks with Indian chip manufacturer CG Semi to assemble and package components for the iPhone, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
CG Semi, part of the Murugappa Group, is building a semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat.
This is the first time Apple is considering chip assembly and packaging in India, and it is likely, but not confirmed, that discussions will include display chips.
The companies are at an initial stage, and no decision has been made on which chips may be packaged at the facility.
CG Semi will need to meet Apple’s quality standards if talks progress.
Apple did not comment on the talks, and CG Semi said it does not comment on market speculation or discussions with specific customers.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
CG Semi lacks needed certifications, Apple’s process could delay 2026
- CG Semi’s G1 line (the first-phase line at its Sanand site) is pursuing ISO 9001 (general quality management) and IATF 16949 (automotive-sector quality management) 1.
- Apple runs audits on labor rights plus environment with checks on health and safety, ethics, management systems then requires reliability testing before any orders 2.
- Pilot builds for customer qualification across packages start after the inauguration, with production slated for calendar year 2026 3.
- Supplying display driver ICs (integrated circuits that control the phone’s display) or other iPhone parts needs high yields and completion of Apple’s multi-stage approvals, so 2026 looks optimistic.
Suppliers can prep for Apple in India with automotive-grade steps
- CG Semi targets automotive, consumer, industrial plus 5G with QFN (Quad Flat No‑lead)/QFP (Quad Flat Package) plus FC BGA (Flip‑Chip Ball Grid Array)/FC CSP (Flip‑Chip Chip‑Scale Package) 4.
- The planned G2 line is due by late 2026 and targets 14.5 million units per day, spurring demand for high volume tools and materials 1.
- Tool vendors in assembly plus test and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for Level 1 automation (equipment-level control plus data collection) can meet IATF 16949 to aid Apple 1.
- Suppliers of substrates with bonding wire plus encapsulants with test sockets should ready documents that satisfy Apple’s Regulated Substances Specification along with environmental rules 2.
- Certification bodies, logistics firms, plus compliance advisors can build depth in Apple’s supplier responsibility program to help CG Semi, while supporting Indian fabs to speed qualification.
